A relaxed and friendly watercolour landscape painting weekend for absolute beginners and those with a little experience amidst the valleys and historic castles in the beautiful Carmarthenshire countryside of West Wales.

If you have been thinking about painting but are not sure how to get started or possibly a little nervous this is your opportunity.

Tutor

Your tutor is Wendy Powell Jones. Wendy is a qualified teacher who has had many years of watercolour painting experience. She has exhibited and sold her work for over 12 years. She believes in painting along with her students and will demonstrate many watercolour techniques throughout the course.

Wendy runs the Bridge Gallery in Llandeilo. Here she shows her own work and that of other artists from the area. A range of cards, small prints and watercolour and sketching materials are also available.

Studio

The Bridge Gallery is part of the Cawdor Arms Hotel and has access to the Hotel’s Cennen Suite which makes an ideal studio from which to run classes and painting workshops. The tuition will be based in the Cennen Suite Studio of the hotel.

Course Content

Studio work

• Materials- A brief introduction to the ‘tools of the trade’ and best buys, including brushes and paper.
• Colour mixing- A guide to mixing appropriate landscape colours from a limited palette. Special help with those problem greens!
• Washes- How to lay on transparent washes and avoid mud!
• Depth- Gaining an understanding of how to utilize warm and cool colours to achieve a sense of depth in a painting.
• Tone- The importance of tonal contrasts to define form

Outdoor work

The amount of time spent outdoors is flexible and will depend upon the weather and the wishes of the group. Location work will be used for information gathering in the from of sketches, photos etc. This information will be used indoors to complete a finished picture.

Areas of interest are within a short distance form the hotel and private transport is available if required.

Minimum required materials - these can be ordered in advance from the gallery.
