Having read the book and enjoyed it so much,I found the film disappointing.But this,I think,is typical of all books put into film version.The answer is to see the film first and then read the book!

Having read Goddards book and learned that it had been produced on video for Carlton with John Thaw in the title role, I made a great effort to obtain a copy. When it eventually arrived I settled down to watch the film adaptation of what was a first class novel. Unfortunately, the video was a great disappointment.
